A field investigation of physical and chemical mechanisms affecting pollutant concentrations in fog droplets

چکیده
High ionic loadings were found in fogwater collected at Bakersfield. California during an extended stagnation episode. The major ions were NH:, NOT, and SO:-, with concentrations usually in the millimolar range. Droplet growth played an important r6le in determining fogwater concentrations. The amount of solute decreased substantially over the course of each fog event; this was attributed, at least in part, to deposition of fog droplets on surfaces. The occurrence of dense fogs thus seemed to limit particle build-up during stagnation episodes. The sulfate fraction in the aerosol increased appreciably over several days of stagnation, but no statistical evidence for in situ S(1V) aqueous-phase oxidation was found. The high ammonia concentrations present were sufficient to neutralize a large fraction of the ambient acidity. As a result, fogwater pH values rarely attained the extremely low values found in other polluted environments.

Discrimination of ionic pollutants except condensation nuclei of acid fog using an ultrasonic humidifier.
Fog droplets in the atmosphere are first produced by the activation of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), which are originally some ionic compound. Subsequently, the nuclei grow by vapor diffusion. Fog droplets are polluted through the activation process and successive diffusion growth and residence (post activation). We cannot distinguish the effects of the two pollution processes of natural fog...

We have studied the effect of gaseous pollutants on fog droplet growth in heavily polluted air using a model that describes time-dependent sulfate production in the liquid phase and thermodynamical equilibrium between the droplets and the gas phase. Our research indicates that the oxidation of SO2 to sulfate has a significant effect on fog droplet growth especially when hygroscopic trace gases,...

Several fog episodes occurred in California’s San Joaquin Valley during winter 2000/2001. Measurements revealed the fogs to generally be less than 50 m deep, but to contain high liquid water contents (frequently exceeding 200 mg/m) and large droplets. The composition of the fog water was dominated by ammonium (median concentration= 608 μN), nitrate (304 μN), and organic carbon (6.9 ppmC), with ...

متن کاملInvestigation the efficiency of magnetized carbon nanotubes in the removal of aniline from aqueous solutions
Background &Objectives: Aniline is a substance used in chemical industries and in various processes such as pesticide production, chemical bleaching, textile dyes, etc. In spite of the negative effects of aniline on the environment due the difficult decomposition of this substance, various methods have been investigated to remove this substance from water resources. The aim of this study was to...
